JIU-JITSU
Practical Self-Defense. Problem-Solving. Personal Growth.

Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art—it is a skill that can change the way you move, think, and respond to challenges.
At The Edge Martial Arts, you will learn practical grappling and self-defense in a structured, supportive environment. Our program welcomes complete beginners, recreational students, serious athletes, and experienced competitors.
You do not need to be young, exceptionally strong, or already in shape to begin. You only need the willingness to learn.

What Is Jiu-Jitsu?
Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that uses leverage, positioning, timing, and technique to control an opponent. Students learn takedowns, escapes, positional control, joint locks, and chokes, along with strategies for staying calm and making good decisions under pressure.
Rather than relying entirely on size or strength, Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to use your body efficiently. Every class becomes a physical workout and a mental puzzle

A Quick History of Jiu-Jitsu
Modern Brazilian and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu grew from Japanese jujutsu and Kodokan judo techniques introduced in Brazil during the early 1900s. Members of the Gracie family continued developing the system with a particular emphasis on leverage, ground fighting, and practical self-defense.
The art gained international attention through challenge matches and, later, the earliest Ultimate Fighting Championship events. Those events demonstrated how a skilled grappler could control and defeat larger opponents through positioning and technique.
Today, Jiu-Jitsu is practiced worldwide for self-defense, fitness, recreation, personal development, submission grappling, and mixed martial arts.
Benefits of Jiu-Jitsu Training
Realistic Self-Defense
Many physical confrontations involve grabbing, clinching, or going to the ground. Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to protect yourself, escape dangerous positions, control an aggressor, and respond appropriately without depending solely on punching or kicking.
Fitness with a Purpose
Training improves strength, cardiovascular endurance, mobility, coordination, balance, and body awareness. Instead of repeating a routine on a machine, you develop fitness while learning a valuable skill.
Confidence Without Ego
Real confidence comes from preparation. Jiu-Jitsu allows you to test your skills safely with training partners, recognize what works, and become comfortable solving problems under pressure.
Mental Focus and Problem-Solving
Jiu-Jitsu is often compared to physical chess. Every position presents choices, consequences, and opportunities. Students learn to think ahead, stay patient, adapt their strategy, and keep working when the first solution does not succeed.
Stress Relief
When you are training, your attention has to remain in the present moment. That focus provides a valuable break from everyday stress and often leaves students feeling clearer, calmer, and more energized after class.
Friendship and Community
Progress in Jiu-Jitsu requires dependable training partners. Students challenge one another, encourage one another, and celebrate each other’s improvement. The friendships built on the mat frequently extend well beyond the academy.
What to Expect in Your First Class
Your introduction will begin with fundamental movements, safe training practices, and an explanation of how the class works. You may learn a basic escape, control position, takedown, or self-defense technique.
Our coaches will guide you through the material step by step. You will not be expected to keep up with advanced students or prove yourself on your first day.
The goal is simple: learn something useful, meet the team, and leave better than you arrived.
